The legal landscape in London remains as fluid as ever. Looking at the top law firms in London 10 years ago, some 20% of the names are no more. The majority have been swallowed up by US firms (Hogan Lovells is perhaps the only genuine merger of equals) a few have disappeared altogether (Halliwells most spectacularly) and a handful have merged with fellow UK firms. To add to Pinsent Masons and Addleshaw Goddard, we now have DAC Beachcroft and Clyde & Co (with the Barlow Lyde & Gilbert name disappearing forever).
With economic uncertainty set to continue and with what still feels like an overcrowded market, expect to see much more ‘consolidation' over coming months. The good news is that the lateral market has never been more dynamic with partners and teams increasingly willing to consider their options. For well managed firms with a clear strategy, there are unprecedented opportunities to recruit senior talent and we expect headline grabbing moves to continue in 2012.
